The original specification (where “C” stands for specification) was released in the early 1980s. It was designed to address the issues of excessive size and insufficient density of traditional connectors such as D-sub connectors, so as to meet the requirements of a new generation of avionics and missile systems.
Upgrade: MIL-DTL-83513
It was subsequently upgraded to a “DTL” (Detail Specification), with more specific and stringent requirements.It lays down detailed provisions for materials (e.g., shell alloy, gold plating on contacts), structure (e.g., contact design, insulators), performance (electrical, mechanical and environmental properties) and qualification procedures, thus forming a complete technical system.

Its designation as a “micro-rectangular” connector stems from its compact rectangular housing and extremely small contact pitch. The standard pitch is 0.075 inches (approximately 1.91 millimeters), while the high-density version can reach 0.050 inches (approximately 1.27 millimeters)—a figure far lower than that of conventional circular connectors.
High-Reliability Contact System
It adopts a combination of detachable twisted-wire sockets and solid pins. The twisted-wire sockets provide excellent resilient contact and vibration resistance performance, and when combined with precious metal plating (usually gold plating), they ensure low contact resistance, long service life and stable electrical performance.
